An 18th-century hand-colored natural-history engraving depicting the Smew, a small diving duck distinguished by its elegant black-and-white plumage. The plate is signed “P. Paillou pinx.” for Peter Paillou, who produced the original bird design, and “P. Mazell sculp.” for engraver Peter Mazell.
The work is consistent with the celebrated bird plates produced for Thomas Pennant’s British Zoology, published in London beginning in 1766. Documented examples from the series are described as hand-colored etchings/copperplate engravings after Paillou by Mazell.
Professionally presented with extensive custom multi-layer cream, black and red matting in a substantial black and antiqued metallic-tone wood frame.
